Starling Glow Project - 2025 AGT™ Glow Commercial Project Honorable Mention
This project is one of the 2025 Glow Project Photo Contest Honorable Mentions
- Substrate: Asphalt
- Glow Aggregates Used: AGT™ ULTRA-X Glow Stones
- Location: Calgary, Alberta.

Positioned at the entrance of the Starling community in northwest Calgary, this innovative glowing pathway system transforms a traditional pedestrian trail into a striking nighttime feature inspired by the movement and beauty of the night sky. Using high-performance AGT™ ULTRA-X Aqua Blue and Sky Blue Glow Stones embedded directly into the asphalt, the pathway creates a flowing, constellation-like glow effect that gently guides pedestrians after dark while reinforcing the community’s dark-sky design aesthetic. The result is a visually stunning and sustainable, electricity-free lighting solution that enhances both nighttime safety and the overall atmosphere throughout the development.

Developed by Brookfield Residential, Starling was designed around the concept of connecting residents to nature, open skies, and nighttime stargazing experiences. Located amid Calgary’s natural grasslands and expansive prairie views, the 281-acre master planned community emphasizes walkability, outdoor recreation, and thoughtfully integrated green space. The glowing pathway system perfectly complements this vision by providing subtle nighttime illumination without the need for traditional high-output lighting, preserving the moody nighttime ambiance that defines the community’s aesthetic.
The glow trail itself uses strategically scattered AGT™ ULTRA-X Glow Rocks to mimic the movement and flow of a starling flock in motion. During the day, the pathway maintains a clean, natural appearance that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. After sunset, however, the glowing aggregates come alive with vibrant blue illumination, creating a magical celestial effect that feels both artistic and functional. The contrast between the dark asphalt surface and the glowing stone distribution delivers a dramatic visual impact while improving nighttime visibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

As one of the first large-scale residential developments in Canada to integrate photoluminescent glow stone technology directly into community infrastructure, the Starling Glow Project demonstrates how glow in the dark pathways and glowing walkways can redefine modern urban design. Rather than relying on energy-intensive lighting systems, the pathway charges naturally during the day and emits ambient light throughout the evening, creating a sustainable solution that enhances both safety and community identity.
Beyond the pathway system itself, Starling features parks, playgrounds, green spaces, walking trails, and future recreational amenities designed to encourage outdoor activity and connection between residents. The glow trail acts as a centerpiece within that vision, reinforcing the development’s focus on creating memorable nighttime experiences that feel immersive, calming, and environmentally conscious.

This honorable mention project beautifully showcases how AGT™ glow in the dark gravel and glow stones can transform commercial and residential infrastructure into visually striking nighttime destinations. By combining innovative design, sustainability, and premium glow performance, the Starling Glow Project stands as a powerful example of how glowing pathways can shape the future of community development.
